This text evolved from two workshops held at the U. of Lund in 2002 and 2003, and investigates the architecture of focus in grammar from different perspectives. Twenty papers by 24 contributors are organized into sections covering theoretical foundations of focus and information structure within grammar; the representation of focus, topic and contrast at the syntax-pragmatics interface; the phonological representation of focus, topic and contrast and it relation to meaning; and focus-related constructions in a variety of languages. The articles investigate relevant and highly current theoretical issues and empirical data from different languages. They put to test the theories developed in recent years within the framework of generative grammar and evaluate whether they can be seen as an essential corner stone of an integrated theory of focus and the related information-structural notions. 　　Barron’s SAT Vocabulary Flash Cards is a brand-new test prep tool that presents 500 SAT high-frequency words, selected because they have appeared as key words in recent SAT reading passages and critical reading and sentence completion questions. Cards are alphabetically arranged in the box, with an extra place-marker card that students can use to gauge their word-learning progress. This vocabulary building flash card set enables SAT test takers to review words they might already know, as well as to master unfamiliar words they are likely to encounter both on the SAT and in their college courses. The front of each card lists the target word along with a guide to its pronunciation and its part of speech. The card’s reverse side presents the word’s definition, uses it in a sentence, and lists synonyms. Students who master all 500 words will find enclosed instructions for making their own flash cards and continuing to expand their vocabularies. Flash cards in this set each have a small punch-hole in the one corner. It accommodates an enclosed metal ring that students can use to arrange select cards for study on the go.

The literary friendship between Alain Robbe-Grillet and Roland Barthes lasted 25 years. Everything attests to their deep and mutual intellectual esteem: their private correspondence, their published texts, their conversations - notably in the famous dialogue which gives its name to this work. Robbe-Grillet freely said he had very few true friends but, next to the publisher J矇r繫me Lindon, he always cited the name of Roland Barthes. In 1980, he wrote his own ‘I love, I don’t love’, published here for the first time, thinking about his friend. In 1985, he predicted: ‘It is his work as a writer which will remain’. Ten years later, in 1995, he imagined him as an impatient, blithe novelist, merrily rewriting - ‘euphorically, with inexhaustible happiness’ - The Sorrows of Young Werther.
This small collection of conversations and short texts by Robbe-Grillet is like the deferred echo of those that Roland Barthes dedicated to him in his Critical Essays in 1964. It offers fresh insight into the development of Robbe-Grillet’s own work as well as that of Barthes, and is are a unique testimony to one of the most important literary friendships of our time.
